The Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce is PROUD to announce the return of the Paavo to our community. Established in 1969, The Paavo Nurmi Marathon is the longest running road race in Wisconsin! We’re excited to make the 2025 race an incredible event and something for our incredible community to take pride in.

SATURDAY 8/9
Transportation:
PRE RACE: Bussing Hurley > Marathon start LEAVING from City Hall* 5:45 am and 6:10am for a 6am and 6:30 am arrival to Marathon START
Bussing Hurley > Half Marathon start LEAVING from City Hall 7 am and 7:30 am for a 7:10 and 7:40 am arrival at half start in Gile
POST RACE: vans will take groups back to Whitecap
Parking:
*City Hall 405 5th Avenue North
Hurley, Wisconsin 54534.
Park anywhere but blocking firetruck entrance and exit. Fire Department doors at City Hall on South Side of building facing West/5th ave. Parking allowed on all city streets North of 77.
Parking available at both STARTS, Marathon: Whitecap Mountains Resort 9106 W Co Rd E, Upson, WI 54565; Half Marathon: Gile Park, 14 Park St, Gile, WI 54525 .4 Miles from start on Division and Mc Crossen
Aid Stations aka Rest Stops:
Mile 3 then at least every 2 miles
Water, fruit, hydration mix (a mix of Gatorade and Powerade), snacks, coke products
Porta potties
Every 5 miles (except mile 25), start, and finish
Road Closures:
For construction: 122 South of county E CLOSED
For the race: Northbound Lane County C - you can ONLY travel South on County C the entirety of Saturday. Runners will fill entire Northbound Lane. Pickup/drop off for relay follows this. You will need to loop back around if you wish to visit multiple miles by entering at 77 and C, traveling South, exiting to 51 and repeat. You will NOT be able to access C from Knight or Anderson Rd.
Finish Line
Long Drink Lounge with Long Drink free to each participant, free entertainment, drinks and food for purchase from food trucks, mojakka for suggested $5 donation “purchase”*, lawn games, Finnish language lessons, Finnish movement lessons, booth of Finnish souvenirs by Little Finland, Historical Society w/ Paavo specials AND MORE dawn to dusk! Everyone is welcome.
Awards Ceremony Time, 1:30pm
Every finisher gets a locally made wooden medal, in addition to a local engraved hat that every entrant received (extra merch for sale at finish).
Miscellaneous:
NO CUT OFF TIME (unless dark or weather pose a safety risk)
Pacers: OnPace will be pacing the Half and Full in 15 min increments with a sweep (read: last place finishes together with someone :)
Half Marathon Winners Get Shoes from Queen City Running
Marathon Winners get locally sourced and carved items
Host Hotel is Whitecap. Their standard room rate is $99 pre tax
Hotel with special is Davo’s at Whitecap $99/night, Beaver’s Lodge in Mercer, and Day’s Inn Hurley and they have $150/night rate
Local airport is Gogebic-Iron County Airport (IWD) ~7 miles to Hurley/Finnish, 14 miles to Whitecap/Start
This is NOT a USTAF certified course. That means you cannot use it to time qualify for Boston, NYC, Chicago, etc
It IS eligible for 50 marathons in 50 states, confirmed with them
There are ~2 miles of gravel on course and some rough pavement - exercise caution!!
We are handcycle friendly, but you might need gravel-type tires
Film crews will be out on course! We received a generous grant to make a documentary, so be prepared for two UTV’s (thanks Cloverland!), a truck, and a drone.
PLEASE do not follow your runner via the route! Safety FIRST. Pre plan to meet your runner at points where other roads intersect the course.
Relay Teams:
There will be someone at mile 5, 15, and 20, but NOT mile 10 to help start you. Use the honor system! Relay participants are responsible for their own transportation. We only have bussing to the start lines of the marathon and half marathon.
Volunteers:
Rest station supplies will be in bins and can be picked up Friday 8am-6:30pm from the Chamber (316 Silver St) or by appointment. Volunteer leads, please contact Melissa
Rest stop water and ice will be delivered by water truck day of to each rest stop
Rest stops must set up at least 20 minutes before the first runner is projected to arrive to assure for water and ice drop and readiness for the runners. Contact Melissa for times if needed
